New York Times: Maria Testifies At Term Limits Hearing

Maria Passanate-Derr, a lawyer and community board member in Greenwich Village and a candidate for City Council, said she was "appalled by the mayor's outright dismissal of the process," adding, "Process is the basis of our democratic government. The indispensable-man argument is based on the politics of fear."

Such fear, she said, is what prompted Congress to pass a $700 billion bailout in record time. She said she was disturbed that Mr. Bloomberg was "not the least bit concerned about the process." She ridiculed the idea that $10 million was too much to spend on a special election. "Don't be influenced by the politics of fear," she warned."

The New York Daily News calls Maria "a challenger for Quinn," in a recent article. "Maria Passannante-Derr, a Greenwich Villiage native...has been gearing up to run for the seat for months and said she hasn't slowed down her efforts."

City Planning Playing Politics With Hearing Schedule?

"This is a travesty" - New York City Council Candidate Maria Passannante Derr

New York City - Greenwich Village community leader and Council Candidate, Maria Passannante Derr and residents and business owners of the Far West Village, are questioning why City Planning has scheduled a hearing for the proposed 120 foot three district sanitation garage to be built on Spring & Washington Streets on August 27th. The controversial meeting is scheduled during The Democratic National Convention.

"This is a travesty, to deliberately schedule this hearing when no one, including the elected officials (who will be at the DNC) will be in town," Passannante Derr said today from her Village Office. "Residents have called upon Speaker Quinn to re-schedule but have not received any positive response."

Maria Passannante-Derr is a current Democratic candidate for New York City Council, District 3. The seat being vacated by Christine Quinn, who is term limited. Find more information on Derr's campaign at her official website: www.mariaforcouncil09.com
